Reflection
My junior project was the biggest project of the year. It was an open ended community project, that only had to meet a few criteria, such as, engaging, reasearch based, community based, and documented. For this project, I worked with my best friend Simona to organize a booth where students at our school had access to free sexual health resources and supplies. We set up a bowl of condoms in the bathrooms and in some classrooms, coupled with informational pamphlets from local sexual health clinics. I feel that this assignment adressed my Civic Literacy and Engagement skills because Simona and I participated in our community through contributing to teaching our peers about safe sex and healthy relationships. We reached out to mentors and non-profits to recieve donations and make connections. I feel that through our project, we successfully impacted the lives of our peers. Our documentation showed that over 100 people took from our booth. From this assignment, I am most proud of the effort Simona and I put in, even after our major setbacks and plan changes. We did not give up and pushed through to our final product. I am proud of the amount of people we were able to reach and the affect we had on our school. I feel that I developed my civic literacy and engagement skills through this project because this was the first big community based project I had done. In the beginning of this journey, I had not half the community knowledge that I have now. I learned how to send a respectful but firm email, I learned how to organize donations, and I learned how to reach the student population. The most difficult thing about the process of my junior project was the setbacks. Our original plan was to have two booths with pamphlets and resources in each bathroom, however our principal changed her mind on giving us permission towards the end of our project. This put a major dent in our plans as we scrambled to revise our timeline. The difficulty of that, however, taught us resilience and taught us to quickly and efficiently remediate our efforts. If I could improve on this project, I might make myself more clear when asking for permission on our project with our principal in the early stages of our project, so that we could have more time to change our plans. This project related to what I have learned in the past because for years before this project, previous juniors had presented their junior projects to us, so I had something to expect. This project will be applicable to my future because next year in my senior project, I will apply my skills learned and knowledge gained to move more efficiently through senior seminar.
