This work sample is a video made for the HARF organization to teach kids of a certain age group about dogs. Each group in the class was assigned a topic regarding dogs to create a video about. My group was Maya, Sua, Simona, and I, and we made a video on how to read a dog’s body language. We used our community engagement teacher’s dog Bougie as the example dog in our video, and we demonstrated the common facial expressions and body language cues of a dog, and how to interpret them. This video will go out and help people in the community be more informed about dogs and how to interact with them. When completing this project I felt very honored to be helping the community in that way.
From this project I am most proud of our video and how informative it was. It was very challenging to get the dog to cooperate with our video script so that we could show examples of certain body language cues. So I feel a significant amount of accomplishment from completing the video with Bougie.
I feel that this assignment addresses my civic literacy 21st century skill because civic literacy is mainly focused on interacting and participating in the community, and I felt very immersed in Maui’s community. All around the island, we have heard people talking about how much they appreciate HARF as an organization, so to be contributing to HARF’s work in the community is a really valuable experience.
I developed my civic literacy skills when doing my HARF video because I feel that I got a better understanding of what it feels like to be involved in the community, and I feel that I am more well rounded in the community, and more confident in my civic literacy.
The most difficult part of completing this project was for one, writing the script to be more understandable for our age groups of kids that are going to watch the video. I also thought that it was also difficult for our group to coordinate all the filming and the cooperation of the dogs.
If I could improve on this project, or redo it, I would film the video in a more soundproof, or quieter place, because in all of our clips, the background noise could be considered distracting. Another thing that I would do differently is including more clips of the dog demonstrating specific emotions.
This project relates to what I have learned in the past because I can compare it to my previous work with HARF.
I can apply this knowledge to my future learning because this video taught me a lot about how to read a dog and I think this information will be beneficial to my future interactions with dogs.
