Spring Exhibition
This year for exhibition I am participating in a culminating research project in Biology, that I will be sharing with my peers, teachers, and parents through exhibition. This project comes hand in hand with a college class we are taking this year called Project STEMulate. This quarter we have been learning all about climate resilience, and climate stressors, and to test our knowledge we were divided into groups, that all focus on different climate issues. My groups main focus is on coral bleaching, ocean acidification, and runoff. My group consists of Taylor, Sinjin, Sophie, and I. We were tasked with a research paper, and that talks about our problem, and our solution. For our project we are doing something unique to this group, we are creating our own experiment. Our experiment is testing the waters of the coral reefs at Kaanapali, and At Ahihi Kinau reserve, to see if there is a difference in certain chemicals in the water due to the fact that the reef at Kaanapali beach is below a golf course.
I have learned a lot from this project, including how to write a successful research paper, which was challenging for me, because there are a lot of steps and things to consider. Not to mention that all the data we gathered for our project needed to be described and told in depth on the slideshow and paper. I also learned a lot about working with a team, because this is a very big and important project, so team communication is essential. I am very proud of this project, because I worked very hard on it, and spent many hours perfecting it. There were challenges, and problems that arose along the way, but overall it went very well.
For this assignment I struggled with meeting the exact expectations Ms. WIlson was expecting for our research paper, because it was a lot of work with our other classes too. If I could do this project again I would chose to research a case study instead of completing my own experiment, becasue I think that made it a great deal harder than it could have been. However I think that my group has really run with this project, and we got everything we could out of it.
I believe that this work sample demonstrates Global Awareness skills because during this project we learned so much about what is happening to the world regarding climate resilience, and climate change. We had lots of homework worksheets that required us to research things that are happening in other countries, and continents so we could get a understanding of the dangers that we are facing that are caused by cliamte change.
