Description
This assignment was one of our essays this semester in English 100. We had to create an informative draft essay that was at least 750 words long and described how to do something or the ins and outs of something that we personally have experience with or know. When writing this essay we were tasked with using the 8 informative writing tips from our textbook to aid in getting our point across. The goal of this essay was to choose a specific audience and tailor the informative writing to this group of people. For the informative essay, I wrote about how to take your first ballet class at a new studio after not dancing because of covid. This topic was one that I had a great deal of experience with and felt like I knew it well enough to write an informative essay on it. My chosen audience was teen girls who were already dancers at a different studio that closed down over covid, so probably had not danced in a while.
Reflection
When writing my informative essay, I felt that it addressed my Communication Skills. I believe this because one of the goals of this essay was to accurately provide information on a subject to the reader. A valuable form of communication was learned through this project because informative writing has the sole purpose of providing information to the reader. Which is why the delivery process of the information is so important. Learning how to communicate this information in a clear concise way to the reader is a use of my communication skills.
From this assignment, I am most proud of my use of a tone of humor in my writing. I feel that I did a good job of reflecting on how the ballet world works, and the funny stereotypes placed on ballet dancers. I like the way I decided to execute my instructions on how to stay out of the way of stuck-up ballet dancers.
I feel that I improved my Communication skills when writing this essay because I got to experiment with the writing style best suited to effectively communicating a possibly boring subject to a specific audience. I got to use a trial-and-error process to improve my communication skills for this essay, and after writing the essay I feel more confident in my skills to convey information through writing.
The most difficult thing about completing this essay was gathering all my thoughts and tips to form a reasonably paced, understandable essay. In some ways, it was more challenging for me to organize my ideas for the outline, than write the actual essay. Personally, I also tend to have more trouble editing and revising, than creating, and spilling words out on the page. So the revision process was another challenge in itself.
I could probably improve this essay by spending more time on the editing process. It is the first draft, so it has not been read over and altered too many times, so it could be helpful to thoroughly edit. I also might change the main topic of the essay and make it a little more simple and applicable.
This project relates to what I have learned in the past because throughout the English 100 course so far, we have been building up to this essay. We have read many sample informative essays, and textbook chapters to help us be the best writers we can be.
I can apply this essay to my future learning because it will help me to write the final research paper for English 100. Informative writing is also very common in day-to-day life, so learning details on how to accurately convey information to your audience will be beneficial to my later casual informative writing experiences.
