Reflection
This finance project was a collective project with the whole junior seminar period 5 class. Every two students were assigned to one topic on a shared slideshow. My partner was Simona and we covered debit cards, and their pros and cons. The rest of the slideshow was covered by the rest of the class, and they included information regarding credit cards, the rule of 72, online and in-person banking, types of credit, types of accounts, and much more. We got to learn all about these subjects when each group presented. Simona and I researched debit cards and learned a plethora of useful information about them that we will take into our adult lives. The purpose of this project was to divide the daunting topics of adulting throughout the class, in hopes that we learn the topic that we researched (in my case, debit cards) as well as the rest of the topics as they were presented to us. I feel that this assignment addresses my Financial, Economic, and Business Literacy skills. Typically, I struggle to find a project that thoroughly develops these skills, but this project was perfect for it. We learned how to manage our money and the fact that debit cards draw money from your actual bank account. We addressed this skill in learning about the forces that drive our economy, like banks and credit unions, different types of insurance, and more. From this assignment, I am most proud of the information on our slides. I feel that we accurately addressed our topic and successfully taught the class through the information on our slides. We covered, what a debit card is and how it works, as well as the specific pros and cons of a debit card. This includes information regarding fraud protection, overdraft fees, and interest. While completing this project, I felt that I developed my Financial Economic, and Business literacy because I learned so much that I did not know before about these finance topics that will help me in the future. I improved my knowledge of the previously stated topics in the slideshow. I learned how the economic world works financially, and I feel more proficient in this 21st-century skill after the project. The most difficult thing about completing this task was not gathering the information, but it was presenting the topic in a way that the rest of our classmates could understand. We were all learning these topics for the first time and were not familiar with the vocabulary and information, so Simona and I found difficulty in simplifying our information enough that it could be understood.
If I could start over on this project, I would add another slide to our topic so we could go more in-depth on debit cards and the pros and cons. This project relates to what we have learned in the past because this unit of junior seminar has been all about finance, economics, plans after high school, and “adulting”. I feel that the things we have learned previously in this unit prepared me to research the information on my slide. I can apply the knowledge I gained from this project to the real world. As I go to college and navigate the world around me, I will be faced with difficulties regarding money and finance, so having this knowledge in my pocket will help me to succeed financially.
